Auckland has an urban population of 1,418,000 and a metropolitan population of 1,529,300, which respectively constitute 32 and 34 percent of the country's population. Auckland has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world. In Māori, Auckland's name is Tāmaki Makaurau and the transliterated version of Auckland is Ākarana.
